review 1: Ruelle and DeSaix write about the few brave residents in Paris who risked all that they had to help the Jewish. When the Nazi’s came to Paris they searched Jewish people to take to concentration camps where many Jewish individuals would die in. The Grand Mosque, which was the center for the Islamic Community in France, became a place where the Jews could escape to and get help. With help from those who lived in the Mosque and those who worked for the Mosque, many Jews were able to create new identities and stay in good hiding from the Nazi’s until the war was over. Still standing today the Grand Mosque served as a safe haven for hundreds of Jews during the Nazi invasion in Paris. This book really stuck out to me because it was something that I had never learned about b... moreefore so getting to read more about it was very interesting. I think that Ruelle and DeSaix do an excellent job in touching on a really difficult issue in a more positive light. I really think that this book would be great in a classroom to show brighter sides to hard situations that we face in the world. Ruelle, K., & DeSaix, D. (2009). review 2: Interesting and sort of half-told. This feels like it's a picture book only because there isn't enough information available for a whole book - the pictures don't add much (though the cover is lovely) and, as others have mentioned, it's definitely written at a high-middle-grade reading level. Still, it's a story you don't ever hear (probably because the details are so sketchy), about a topic that interests lots of kids. less
