review 1: I don't agree with all of this book, and I certainly don't understand it all, sometimes on an intellectual, sometimes an emotional level. However, a thoughtful, articulate person tries to be completely honest about his Vietnam wartime experience, and what it meant at the time and now, while simultaneously giving recommendations about how to treat war and warriors. Everyone should read this book, or one like it.
review 2: Whatever I was expecting from this title, the actual book far exceeded those expectations. The author, himself a war veteran, not only describes his experiences of warfare, but looks at the common human experience of war from a present, past and future perspective. It touches on history, sociology, psychology and philosophy--perhaps even a li
... morettle biology. Very insightful. I have often thought about war, though I have no personal experience of it. This book answers a lot of my questions on the subject, at least to my satisfaction. It is not a pro-war or anti-war book in the strict sense; if it calls for change, it is that we all try to recognize and properly utilize our inner warrior. It would be a better world if our world leaders would implement some of the author's suggestions when they considered the massive and terrible undertaking of war.Highly recommended. less
