review 1: Extremely well paced, thought-provoking, et cetera. Only portion of this long novel where I was jolted out of the text was towards the end when Hawke reveals he's going regular, and Mellas behaves as if he and Hawke didn't already have a conversation about why someone might decide to go regular. This made me think a bit more about the "thunderstorms in Laos" my mother often heard during her adolescence.Bravo to the author for giving this story the proper time to marinate.
review 2: Touted as the definitive Vietnam War novel, Matterhorn had to hump some extra weight on the way in. I liked this novels depiction of battle, the mundane horrors of war were right there, naked to the eye. You get an excellent feeling for the way grunts have to deal with the bureaucracy
... more of the military while trying to save their own asses. A definite page turner, worth a hot toddy or two on a long winters night. Definitive? Umm. Certainly a great depiction of one aspect of the war. less

Unbelievable level of detail without getting overly technical or wordy. Takes a little more time than normal to get to know all the characters and relationships, particular if not familiar with military org structure. Found myself referring back to the table at beginning that showed all the characters and how they were connected. Reads like a cross between a novel and a documentary about the toll on young men thrown into a terrible era in US History.
