review 1: A SFPL "On the Same Page" book. I was expecting an antiwar book, but the author, who was a Marine officer in Vietnam, wants the military to give better "spiritual and psychological tools" to help servicemen & women cope with the conflicting and dissonant feelings one gets from being in war. His solution was a bit too new-agey for me, but he provides a good framework for thinking about these things.
review 2: Amazing writing, engaging, and insightful. Raises many important questions and gets some beautiful answers. Unfortunately he does not get beyond the need for the spiritual and mixes the Bible with Indian rituals, Greek myths, mild tree hugging, and other oddities. He admits and uncovers problems but is forced to go in circles. Even if his political opinions
... more and failure to stick to any absolutes are frustrating, it is still a good book and enlightens and stirs up many issues few people are willing to address. Even less would be equipped to expound and explain them with his skill. It is impossible to emerge without respect for the author and without questions that will not drag at you long after.(His subject matter and use of language is not for the fainthearted.) less

This is Fayetteville's One Book/One Community Read, and I'm looking forward to meeting the author at the end of the month. This book isn't particularly a "pleasant" book to read...it is laying heavy on my heart...but I also think it's an excellent book, and one that needs much discussion and much action taken to better prepare our military forces spiritually and emotionally - not just physically - for what they unfortunately must often do! A heartbreaking read.

Amazing. A must read for anyone who's ever thought about war.
