This month I managed to read and review six books, which isn’t as many as I usually read in a month but I did manage to reach 100 books read this year which exceeded my target of 75! I also shared my unboxings of two subscription boxes and rounded off the year with my overall top 5! Here is a reminder of what I blogged about this month with links to each in case you missed any!
The first book I read this month was one I had been very excited about. Bonfire is the debut novel by actress Krysten Ritter and it tells the story of an environmental lawyer who returns to her home town after a decade away to work on a case. But as the story develops she unearths past secrets and we see how the past and the present collide. This was a really interesting story which kept me hooked. Another book which had me gripped this month was The Pictures by Guy Bolton. Set in LA during the 1930’s this is a crime thriller in which we meet a detective who has spent his career as a Hollywood fixer, protecting the reputations of the studio stars. But when he becomes caught up in a complex case, he begins to uncover a web of secrets and scandal which sheds new light on recent tragedies.
This month I also continued my attempt at trying to catch up with the books I have had on my TBR for years. In December I finally got round to reading Red Rising by Pierce Brown. I really liked the concept of this story which explores life on Mars for a ‘Red’ – a miner tasked with extracting the necessary elements to make Mars habitable, only to discover it has been for generations. This signals the beginning in a remarkable journey to rise against the oppressors. I also read Room by Emma Donoghue, which is a book that needs little introduction. Narrated by a five year old boy, it explores the life of a child who lives with his mother in a room, which is the only world he has ever known. This was a harrowing and compelling read which ultimately explores the strength of maternal love.
I unboxed two bookish subscription boxes this month. I received my first box from Wildest Dreams Book Box, a new YA sub box. And then of course there was my regular Fairy Loot box, the theme of which was ‘Oh So Regal’ and I loved the contents! I went on to read the featured book for December which was Everless by Sara Holland. This was an enjoyable read with an interesting concept which features the use of blood as time and punishment. I also enjoyed the book featured in November’s Fairy Loot box, The Last Namsara, as it was all about dragons and those that seek to slay them!
