review 1: Sixteen-year-old Hannah tries to make sense of her twin sister's suicide, but falls into depression. Her older brother returns from college to help her, bringing his friend Julian, who happens to be her ex. Yeah, you can see where this is going. The writing in A SLIVER OF HOPE is at best mediocre. While some of the phrasing writer Karla Nellenbach uses are unique and catchy, Nellenbach must have missed the memo about using adjectives and adverbs sparingly as well as the one about the avoiding the trap of the overuse of "I" when writing on the first person. The overall plot isn't bad, although the whys of Hope's suicide lack depth and do a disservice to the very real complexities of teen depression and suicide. YA readers deserve better than that.A SLIVER isn't bad for a s... moreelf published book, though having a professional agent and editor could have made this an above average novel.
review 2: 3 1/2 star book not because it was a bad book but more so it just felt like something was missing and also it wasn't exactly my style of book. With that said if you are looking for an angsty style read that will have you feeling strong emotions this is definitely a book for you. You start out the book on April 1st were a young girl is telling you all about how her and her twin sister are going to the best prank ever for thier final year of high school. Then bam in your face you find out the tragic news that one of the sister's has committed suicide. You feel so much for the twin who is left to pick up the peices of her broken heart. By the second chapter you find out that Hannah the twin that is alive is writing in a journal to her sister Hope. Hannah is struggling with why her sister took her own life. For her there were no signs of her being unhappy and she just cannot wrap it all around in her head.As we all know people say that twins share a huge bond that no one else unless they are a twin can understand. Through this book you totally see how important that bond is and how this horrible incident has effected Hannah's belief of really knowing her sister. The cast of characters are great you have Doug, Hope and Hannah's older brother. I really enjoyed Doug because he was truly there for Hannah. Then you have Julian, Hannah's ex-boyfriend and Doug's best friend. For me his character was good but I just feel like the author left some stuff out about how Hannah's and his relationship ended. The book is basically taking you through Hannah's day to day life and her struggle with excepting that her sister is gone. There is a good deal of drama especially as Hope's secrets are revealed. I think it was fantastic watching Hannah grow and move forward with her life. Like I said at the beginning the book is a really good read just not what I truly enjoy reading. I do recommend it though because it could be exactly what you are looking for. less
