review 1: Three words can be used to describe this book. No. Plotline. Whatsoever. This entire book is about how this girl goes to Milan and stays in a house learning Italian and eating food. When I picture this book, I see a flat line. Like someone flatlining in a hospital. From reading this book. And dying of boredom. I loved the setting, though, and I appreciated the sensory detail, which is why i rated this book two starts instead of one.

Filled with lush descriptions of Milan and well fleshed out depictions of Mia’s Italian family, this book kept me interested from the very beginning. Beyer’s demons are not always the scary, power-hungry entities that often populate paranormal books. The description of one of the demon’s reasons for returning are heart-wrenching, leaving me feeling almost sympathetic to her. The Messengers, who let the Della Torres know when a demon is approaching, also have a sad history and burden. The book has a satisfying ending that will leave readers anxious to see Mia’s development in the sequel. less
