review 1: The Wilde Girl was a beautiful tale of perseverance and love in the face of hardship, poverty and abuse. I never realized that so much was known about the lives of the Grimm brothers; the authors note in the back says their diaries even let us know their day to day activities. The backdrop of the Napoleonic wars lent an aspect of reality to the story, pulling the Wilde brothers out of their fairy tale mythology and into history. I found it appropriate that, like the original fairy tales, this story had a darkness to it that counters our happily ever after expectations. A very enjoyable read.
review 2: The second book I have read by Kate Forsyth - (I loved the first, "Bitter Greens") - and while "The Wild Girl" is totally different, I loved it equally! While "Bi
... moretter Greens" is sort of a reinterpretation of a fairy tale, "The Wild Girl" focuses on the way the fairy tales by the Brothers' Grimm came into existence. Dortchen Wild lives in the house next door to the Grimm family, and she's loved Wilhelm Grimm since - well, pretty much forever. The attraction is mutual, and the pair grow ever closer through their shared love of fairy stories, of which Dortchen has many to tell. This book isn't the upbeat love story you'd perhaps imagine - parts are pretty disturbing and harrowing to read, and it has some fairly dark themes, but it's really, really beautifully written and has a definite magical quality about it. less
