review 1: The book brings out clearly the way women were almost totally powerless, owning nothing that their husbands could not take away. One of the earliest divorce cases outside the ecclesiastic courts or parliament, the trial and it's result are quite fascinating. I didn't realise just how small a world was represented by Victorian society. Darwin, Dickens, Georges Sands and many other familiar names make their appearance. At first, I had the ungracious thought that perhaps the author was making up some of the quotes, but when Google turned up obscure letters by Darwin, I was converted. An interesting glimpse into Victorian life.I was led to this book by my perceptive e-friend Brenda
review 2: A very detailed portrayal of the Victorian Era and in England's criminal/
... morelegal system -focusing on divorce laws, unfair to women, through presenting the case of Isabelle Robinson's divorce through her infidelity. This book is a detailed look at a woman in the Victorian age who is unhappy in her marriage and looking for an escape. The book talks of the roles of women at this time and how they lived with little power or say in their own lives. Isabelle Robinson was rather selfish and constantly looking for male attention. I did not agree with the choices she made, but I could see her reasons based on the details we were given of the life she had with her husband. If you enjoy the Victorian Era you will thoroughly enjoy this book and appreciate the story and research. I found the story and its presentation most interesting. less
