review 1: 5++++++ Gum Tree stars!!! I fell in love with this book in the first chapter. I did not want to put it down. My emotions were all over the place with this story. The author has a way to make you feel like part of the story as if you are actually there experiencing it with the characters. I love how we get just the right amount of back info regarding Nick and Alix. My heart was breaking for Alix for all that she went through. She was a little back and forth when it came to Nick, but it was totally understandable. It was very clear from the beginning that these two had something special and they loved each other immensely. A lot of what happened could have been prevented if Nick just would have told Alix, but I understand they were kids and he was doing what he thought was r... moreight. I loved how Nick was determined to be a better man for Alix than what he thought he was. The secondary characters were great also. How can you not love Judge. Nick and his relationship was amazing and heartwarming. This was just an amazing story that everyone should take the time to read. You will not be disappointed.
review 2: 5 STARSWow... what a journey. A very beautiful, heart breaking, full of mistakes, forgiving/unforgiving journey. I finished reading this in one sitting. The development of the story and these characters felt so... real. Not forced or drama for the sake of drama. We read about the friendship formed between an 8 year old Alix and a 10 year old Nick and how it slowly grows into something more. The book tells us the story of these two characters in the span of 26 years give or take a few. They faced hardship some good some bad and heart breaking together and separately which lead to the events in their lives. Some things were unforgivable and others were a mistake. They both definitely made mistakes as well as the other characters but that's life. sometimes you make stupid decisions that follow you around for the rest of your life... and on those rare occasions Can it be fixed... forgivable and The Sweet Gum Tree was a great example of that. Throughout the story I never once doubted Nick or Alix's love for each other and just knew without a doubt they will work out... They HAD to work it and if they didn't then it just proved that there are things that's just can't be forgotten. I loved this book! less
