review 1: It's interesting to see how equally distributed the reviews on Amazon were, from "I hate it" to "I love it." I appreciate the spare language, the gut-punch style of narrative. It's a dark, disturbing look at how a teen assimilates in a world where there are few choices. The author didn't paint a pretty picture, but life isn't always pretty. And not every story has a happy ending. I enjoyed it as a change of pace from other books with young protagonists whose main dilemma is which boy she should fall in love with.
review 2: coming on the heels, for me, of "Fourth of July Creek" this novel felt utterly one dimensional. it's a perhaps novel. perhaps if i read it at some other time. perhaps if the characters learnt something or experienced growth through the novel.
... more perhaps if they had more unique voices--sometimes meshing into one another. perhaps if this was 25 years or more ago, where the "shocking" things that happened in the novel would have still held shock value. perhaps. perhaps. less

powerful prose fast moving very disturbing. ..don't want to meet Nicki at 18 if she lives that long.

Hard to review - bold, raw writing. Compelling and vivid. Not what I expected.
