review 1: The premise sounded fun, like an offbeat chick lit breath of fresh air in the midst of its more earnest contemporaries. Unfortunately I found plot and characters more ludicrous than comic, and the novel's ending unsatisfying. After all of the gyrations of a mostly unlikable, and almost caricatured cast of individuals, even the budding romances meant to give the reader satisfaction for its downtrodden lovelorn seemed flat - and suspended, as though waiting for the next book in the series.
review 2: Okay, I admit it, it was addictive and fun. If three stars meant "I enjoyed it" then I suppose I would have given it three stars. I enjoyed it in the sense of laughing at it not with it? But that's different from " I liked it" . The flap says " upmarket escapist". It... more's a beach book, people! Is it upmarket because one of the characters is an author? Because it's French? So much of the dialogue did not ring true to me. Do French people really go around using so many endearments? Not in my recollection, mon petit chou! And the whole bit about Josephine and praying to the stars? Did she really have to infantilize that character quite so much and make her so emotionally needy? That teenage daughter was pretty awful and so was the sister, and the mother. And is Jo just going to end up with Philippe in the next book? And that whole British royal family connection? Pulease! less
