review 1: I would have given this a four if it hadn't ended so abruptly. It felt like there were about a hundred pages of character development missing. Even so, the main character is spunky and enjoyable and about as honest as can be. She must deal with a lot of loss - parents, home, country but never self thank goodness. Could be a good book club book for tweens, but again, with all the loss she suffered, there felt like there were pages upon pages missing from this story.
review 2: I loved Rooftoppers, so I had very high expectations for this story. While it is beautifully written, it's a very different sort of story. It's very grim and sad without the magical elements of Rooftoppers. Will, the fierce young protagonist, is an extremely strong and independent character
... more. Unfortunately, things spin quickly out of her control when her father dies of malaria, and she is sent away from her loving home in Zimbabwe. She experiences the cruelty of her fellow boarding school students who don't accept a girl who has been raised to feel more at home with hyenas and farm hands than school uniforms and silverware. She is out of her element, friendless, and completely ignorant of this new culture. It takes all her wits to survive in this new world. Beautifully written descriptions of Zimbabwe. Her previous book was a great choice for fantasy lovers, this one is better suited to realistic fiction fans. (Rebekah) less

So glad to see that Will kept her spunk through to the end.
