review 1: I thought this book was charming and not your typical romantic novel. Rooted in a specific time and place (the weeks leading up to President Obama's election) in a small town seaside Irish village, the author made us understand the desperate intensity the main male character felt about this crucial time in America's history and the loneliness of the 39 year old main female character. Nicely done.
review 2: Two daughters and their father living in Dublin--all suffering from one degree or another of depression--are joined by a cheerful American distant cousin. He and one of the sisters fall in love. There is a great deal of rambling rumination on the part of all. Eventually, near the very end of the book, there is not so much as a plot twist as a slight curve (... morewe all saw it coming.) One would hope this would ramp it up a bit, but no...it only leads to more pointless rumination. I found this tedious to the extreme. less
