review 1: After reading many of the reviews of this novel, I eagerly looked forward to reading it ... expecting to be in the 5 star camp ... because it just sounded like the kind of book I really would like: unique, original, surrealistic, puzzling etc. It was all of those things ... and I read the first 25 pages or so very carefully ... then started to read faster .... then about half way through the book started racing just to get done with it. I ended up in the 1 to 2 stars camp for the same reasons as the other Goodreads readers who are in that camp.
review 2: There are a lot of five-star sentences in this book. Davis is so creative and so adventurous as a writer that it's actually a bit tiring to keep up with her. Not sure why this was published/written as "a n
... moreovel" when it very clearly is a set of (weird) short stories that start to creak a little in the places where they're bent back toward the others to justify novel-dom. The good parts of this book are so good and make me think it should be more famous; the parts that didn't work for me make me wonder how it got as famous as it did. Very weird, not about rowboats. Davis has a shtick, and it pays off about half the time. Glad I read this but it was a little bit of a chore to finish. less
