review 1: If there were 1/2 stars I might have given it a 3 1/2. But felt the 4 stars were more representing how I felt about this book than 3 stars. I loved the Florence setting. But would recommend it to avid readers.
review 2: The journey of a young woman is chronicled, not just her travels to and from the richly illustrated city of Florence, but her evolution from wide-eyed ingenue to an older artisan carrying the weight of a secret, a mistake and a betrayal. ... morethe emerging woman, seeking to find her career as the direction of her identity unfolds. Kathryn Kay takes us on an artistic pilgrimage to the place of Marina's awakening as a skilled gilder and a self-aware woman and mother. less

This was a nice, easy read. Not too complicated. A book about friendship and love.

It was interesting, well written, and enjoyable to read, but not outstanding.
