review 1: This book was SO much fun. It has a little of everything: royal intrigue, steamy romance, epic battles, crazy inventions, elaborate costumes, and much more. The steampunk spin on the story was so inventive; I loved the details, and how the well-known story of Camelot became completely fresh in Kathryn's hands. And yet, Vivienne is now a character I'll be surprised to NOT find in other Arthurian tales--it feels like she's been there all along, only just sneaking around behind-the-scenes. And her love interest, Marcus! There's a luscious scene with the two of them in the rain in a barn and... enough said. And MERLIN. The fabulous new take on Merlin is reason enough to read this. Don't miss it!
review 2: I'm not usually a fan of retellings or King Arthur stories, ... morebut I love steampunk so I thought I'd give this one a chance. I'm really glad I did! Vivienne is such a strong character, with lots of cool engineering and alchemy skills. Merlin is just way too cool (and I liked the author's interpretation of him), and Marcus and Vivienne are so ridiculously hot together (the scene in the rain, omg). The writing is also beautiful, but I think my favorite part was how the author wove together the steampunk and Camelot elements, and included an interesting conflict of magic versus machine throughout the book. The story wraps up nicely but also sets up the next book, and I'm excited to see where the series goes! Definitely check if out if you like steampunk, King Arthur stories, or fantasy with great world building. less
