review 1: The story explores the complex life of Lucy and her son Merlin who has Asperger's syndrome and the wonderful literal interpretation of the world characteristic of his unique perspective of the world. A thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable romp perfect for a summer afternoon but with a deeper message. Having lived with Asperger's syndrome for 25years the mother/ son relationship is portrayed accurately with all the humour and heartache. It is laugh out loud and incredibly moving but with an old fashioned satisfying ending. I would agree with the reviewer comments"the curious incident from a mothers point of view". The ups,the downs and the difficulties of maintaining an "ordinary" adult life are all explored. Worth a look.
review 2: Disappointing. I was expecti
... moreng something more serious and realistic, especially after seeing an interview with the author where she states it was partially based on experiences with her own son. Unfortunately it's really pretty light and fluffy, more of a romance than an exploration of raising a child with Aspergers. I don't know why I expected this now considering that the author is Kathy Lette and the blurb on the back does mention a search for a man. It was readable and kind've funny but not a heck of a lot substance. Merlin's behavioural difficulties seem to consist of a hatred of school and asking awkward questions, not so different from a lot of non-autistic children. The characters were very annoying and one dimensional - I couldn't understand the mother's lack of support, the husband's complete assholeness (like an evil villain) and the mother's desperate blindness (after becoming a tough and independent single mother why would she return to the husband who let her and her son down for 13 years, just after a few short months). The romance between the mother and Archie was so predictable - the typical asshole turns out to be loveable rogue kind of thing, while the suave charming gentleman is really the bastard. Of course Archie isn't really a lazy misogynist, it's all an act! The ending too - predictable and syrupy sweet. The only thing I know about the authors motherhood experience is that it turned her into a hard nosed, sex starved and very gullible bitch. less

I find Kathy Lette's characters' constant one-liners really annoying but still enjoyed this story

Hmmmm. Bit disappointed thought it would be more about autism than it was.
