review 1: I was very disappointed in this book. I enjoyed it at first but I couldn't even finish it. I've worked with autistic adults but don't know much about autistic children so I'm not sure how believable Merlin is, but this book seemed to be all about Lucy and what she wanted from life.I found the part in the book where Merlin is persuaded to take his clothes off in the woods and be photographed by a stranger both tasteless and distasteful and wondered whether this was actually supposed to be funny. Although calling the police is mentioned the whole incident seems to be brushed over and Archie beating up the photographer and retrieving Merlin's belongings was just ludicrous.Archie is a cartoon character, totally unbelievable and the relationship between him and Lucy is so so pr... moreedictable. Some of the conversations involving sex between Lucy and her mother are very hard to believe in, as a mother I don't think many parents would be so open with their own daughter. Would Jeremy really expect to walk back into their lives after thirteen years and would Lucy really make it so easy for him?Full of cartoon characters, predictable, unbelievable and yawn inducing.
review 2: OMG, I really liked this book, although I must confess when the husband came back on the scene, I could see right through his reasons like a glass window. I found myself speaking out loud to the character of Lucy, "Don't do it" and "Give him a serve" plus other things I was just dying to say to Jeremy and his status climbing mother. Urgh!!!I believe that the authors sign has Asperger's, though probably not as badly as the title character, nor would her son lived a life as unsupported as Merlins. I suspect there is a bit of the author in the character of Lucy, as the one liners that issued forth from Lucy's lips sound very much like the author when I have seen her interviewed. (also the character of 'Tawdry' sounds a bit like another famous TV cook, who I believe the authors husband once dated. hmmm)All in all, I really liked the book, and I am glad it all ended well. I may go seek out more of Kathy Lette's books as I really enjoyed this book. less

Sort of a hard read! So many flippant one-liners clouding what was a really beautiful story.

Funny moments but a bit grim and the central character wasn't very likeable.

Way too over the top with wisecracks, but Merlin was written well
