I’m thrilled to be on the blog tour today for The Second Captive, written by Maggie James and published by Bloodhound Books.
BLURB:
Beth Sutton is eighteen years old when she is abducted. Held prisoner in a basement, she’s dependent on her captor for food, clothes and her very existence. As the months pass, her hatred towards her imprisoner changes to compassion.
But Beth cannot forget that her abductor is also a killer. And she has evidence to prove it.
Then Beth escapes.
Can Beth escape from the prison that she has found herself in?
And is there a relationship between love and fear?
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Maggie James is a British author who lives in Bristol. She writes psychological suspense novels. Before turning her hand to writing, Maggie worked mainly as an accountant, with a diversion into practising as a nutritional therapist. Diet and health remain high on her list of interests, along with travel. Accountancy does not, but then it never did. The urge to pack a bag and go off travelling is always lurking in the background! When not writing, going to the gym, practising yoga or travelling, Maggie can be found seeking new four-legged friends to pet; animals are a lifelong love!
MY REVIEW: I would like to thank Maggie James, Sarah Hardy and Bloodhound Books for allowing me the opportunity to read an ARC of The Second Captive prior to taking part and being a stop on the blog tour. I can confirm that I chose to read this ARC and all opinions in this review are my own and are completely unbiased.
Oh bejesus, Gordon Bennett!! This is one heck of a read that’s going to stay with me for a while, phoooooooooooooo!!! I didn’t just read it. I didn’t just enjoy it. It got me in a huge bear hug and I actually think it’s still got me in one – I was immersed, like super super submersed!
Written from two different perspectives – during and after the capture – Maggie James has tackled a subject that is rarely a part of any psychological thriller (or at least the ones I have read) – Stockholm Syndrome, which is a disorder in which a hostage expresses feelings such as empathy, sympathy and love towards their captor.
Now, at times, don’t get me wrong, this is one hell of a difficult read, but it’s a difficult read I just couldn’t put down. A two year long brutal confinement would be enough to put anybody off reading about, but Maggie James is just so damn good at writing that it’s so obvious extensive research has been done, it comes through sharp and vast! I mean this is a disorder that is glossed over in the most recent DSM Manual. Maggie James, you seriously need to be having a word with them.
WOW!! Seriously WOW!! I just loved The Second Captive!
