review 1: PUBLISHERS WEEKLY, STARRED REVIEWloner, 16-year-old Evie seeks companionship where she can find it, whether it's with the group of girls who tolerate her company at lunch or with her crush, Jonah, a college dropout whose job entails clearing dead animals from the woods by a wealthy suburb. Evie often sees Jonah on her paper route and is there right after he discovers the body of Zabet (short for Elizabeth), a girl Evie was friends with years ago. Evie gradually befriends Hadley, Zabet's destructive best friend, who wants Evie's help tracking Zabet's killer. Evie's palpable loneliness is excruciating, and debut novelist Williams's prose brings readers deep inside Evie's psyche. Her first-person narration is full of the kind of thoughtful descriptions one might expect from s... moreomeone who's much better at observation than interaction. Evie's raw honesty and the choices she makes make for difficult reading, but also a darkly beautiful, emotionally honest story of personal growth.
review 2: This book was actually a bit creepy and chilling. In my opinion, the characters were all very strange. First, you have Evie, a lonely nobody who is obsessed with an older guy to the point where it's unhealthy. Then, there is Hadley, a total nutcase. She is super bipolar and it's difficult to keep up with her ever changing mood swings. I'm not even quite sure about the dead girl, Zabet. It seemed to me that she was just some follower to the almighty leader, Hadley. Hadley had a way of manipulating everyone close to her. Even though the characters were strange, I enjoyed the suspense being built up and I thought this book had tons of little messages hidden throughout. I was never bored of the story, in fact it was hard to put down because I just had to know who killed Zabet. In my mind, I thought it was very clear that Hadley had done it. I mean, Hadley definitely had anger issues and was very violent. She attacked Garret for no reason and then trapped Jonah! Jonah had his leg amputated!! The damage Hadley done was really extreme and super creepy. Why did Evie not turn her in?? Anyway, it just appeared that Hadley was the most capable of killing someone than any other character. I hated that the killer was just some random guy who had no reason to murdering someone. I also hated that everyone moved away and Evie was left to being the antisocial teen she was before. So I guess this book was all in all okay. It had some moments and definitely some let downs, so I would say it was average. less

Unlikable characters and a short yet dragging tale utterly redeemed by fantastic prose.
