review 1: Literally the worst book I ever read. I was intrigued by the cover with the trees cut out of it but the pages inside left much to be desired. I could only stomach about 30 pages of it before I had to put it down to resist throwing it at a wall. The main character Evie is pathetic, desperate, a compulsive liar and downright unnerving. What teenage girl, when told of her classmate's death immediately wants to know the manner of death and whether or not she was raped or not and asks all these questions with a smile? If you're thinking about reading this book here's a tip for you: don't.
review 2: Sixteen-year-old Evie has few friends in her high school, and perhaps to get attention, she stretches the truth about her relationship with the mysterious Jonah. It's his
... more job to pick up the carcasses of animals that die in the woods, and when he discovers the body of a classmate with whom Evie was close many years ago, Evie also lies about just how well she knew Zabet, the girl who was murdered. Hadley, another classmate prone to violent outbursts, befriends Evie, and the two plot to find Zabet's killer. They make a list of possible suspects, one of whom is Jonah, and Hadley literally sets a trap for him. While I liked a lot of the book, there are also holes in the story, and I could never quite figure out Hadley's motivation for behaving as she did even while I could understand Evie's willingness to follow in her footsteps. The author creates several possible suspects for Zabet's death and keeps readers guessing until the very end. The book is a vivid reminder about how it is impossible to really know someone. less
