review 1: This standalone Christmas novella brings us back to the small town of Gardiner, Montana and is the story of Tess, a waitress and Lucas, a short order cook. Tess was previously introduced as a minor character in Katy's debut novel By Proxy - a fallen woman in a predominantly Christian town, known for making bad choices in her life, particularly with men. Lucas is a recently released convict who has been silently working with Tess and waiting for his opportunity to show her that she needs a special someone in her life, and that he is it.This short (approx 40 pages) tale of two bruised lonely souls is captivating from the first page. Don't let its length fool you - there is a wealth of emotion and depth to the story that is clearly presented in such a way as to pull the re... moreader in quickly and completely. Neither Tess nor Lucas believes they are worthy of the other - and yet it is their emotional vulnerability that makes the feelings they develop for each other so strong. This is romance the way it should be written - sweet and tender, emotionally uplifting, leaving the reader with a smile on her face and joy in her heart. Definitely a 5 star read and one of my favourites of this year!
review 2: Spoiler Alert! If you like a sweet, sappy, whirlwind, romance story where everything that was wrong seems be made right, then this may be a story for you. This short story is well written and engaging, but, if you are practical and realistic, then it may be hard to really enjoy the “Aww, how sweet!” parts of the story.A woman who has been trampled upon by men since she was small and doesn’t think much of herself, or her dreams, finally meets a man who sees more than just a body and an opportunity for pleasure. She is treated with the respect and dignity that should be given to any woman. She falls in love with him. A man who failed at protecting his sister from an abusive boyfriend meets a woman who is abused and used by other men. He wants to protect her and make her believe in herself and her dreams. He falls in love with her. They barely know each other at all and then next thing you know, they are engaged and sleeping together. This all happens within the Christmas season. They believe they have true love, and maybe they do. But, too often in real life, this kind of situation usually ends up with an unhealthy relationship or a bad ending. Just because life has been cruel does not mean it is a good idea attach oneself right away to the first person that is decent, or needs protection, without first spending time to get to know them. For me, a longer timeline for their pre-engagement relationship and descriptions of how they got to know each other, more than the most basic of background information, would have been more romantic and enjoyable. It was too perfect and too fast to be believable as a “happy ending”. less
