review 1: On all accounts I've should have loved this book. It falls into my feminist list: 1). Main character isn't white 2). Willing to stand up for what she believes in 3).Worries more about her dreams and less about marriage. 4). Goes after said dreams. 5). Meets adversity in clever and intelligent ways. Maybe my standards are too high. Because none of them were met. Jade Moon has dreams of being something more. That something more is out there, but not in strict China. Equally troublesome is that she's a fire horse and fire horses girls are head-strong and stubborn. Where it's believed she has brought bad luck to the family by simply being intolerable klutzy. The story is mostly the same reminder over and over that she's a Fire Horse, then other people reminded me. I dislike wh... moreen people use astrology as an indicator of any type of personality traits. You aren't such a Virgo and if I don't get you it's not because you are a Gemini. You aren't unique, there are a bunch of other (insert astrology) like you. I understand the Chinese Zodaic is part of the culture and history, but I have never heard any Asians refer to themselves in manners of being an elemental animal. A lot of nothing happens throughout the book. Until Jade steals Sterling's Promise papers that the ball starts rolling to which I couldn't even bother to continue on.
review 2: When Jade Moon, born in the unlucky year of the Fire Horse, immigrates with her father to America in 1923 and is detained at Angel Island Immigration Station, she is determined to find a way through and prove that she is not cursed. She cuts off her hair, disguises herself as a boy, and ends up working as hired muscle for one of the tongs in San Francisco's Chinatown. A complex and fascinating historical fiction/adventure/love story. less
