review 1: I had to read this for college and it was alright. Definitely better than some other books we had to read because the author, Kelsey Timmerman, is a really personable guy. His voice is very strong throughout the whole thing and he actually had me laughing at some parts.I only gave this two stars because I wouldn't have finished it if I didn't have to. It was good enough for a forced read, but the argument could be summed up in less than 1000 words: the world is not good and bad, black and white. There's a lot of gray area: is child labor bad? Good? The answer is always both. Just like labor overseas... it's cheaper, which is good for the consumer, but it promotes the terrible working conditions for the laborers. Basically be an active consumer and don't just buy mindlessly... more. Sometimes it's good to spend the extra dollar for people who are in labor unions and have protected rights. All in all, it was meh, but I'm not going to be re-reading it any time soon.
review 2: I read this book after reading another book on the fashion industry, Overdressed by Elizabeth Cline. While Overdressed was a well-researched while still personal reflection on the fast-fashion industry, this book felt more like a personal travel diary. Don't expect an in-depth analysis of the industry, but if you enjoy stories, this book might appeal to you. Good on the author for taking on this personal trek, but I felt the book lacked maturity. While on a mission to identify exactly where each of his favourite clothes were made and by whom, he failed to produce a well-rounded perspective of the issues surrounding the globalization of the fashion industry. To be fair, the industry is complex, but this book is nonetheless just a collection of personal stories and discoveries and as such, left me wanting more. less
