review 1: Took me a little while to get into this book. I had to reread a bit as I was getting confused about characters and the language. Almost gave up on it. But by page 50 or so I was enjoying the story and by the middle if the book I could not put it down. Story takes place in South Africa in the war years and tells of a Jewish family who tries to fit into the white SA culture... and does not. More layers as you read; well written and a GoodRead!
review 2: Wrenching and filled with wonderfully drawn characters this book admits us to a world few know, the early 20th c. Jewish immigrants to South Africa. There is a lot of Yiddish and Afrikaans in this novel, many times not translated or defined. I'm lucky enough to know people from SA, and I could puzzle out the d... moreifferent spelling of the Yiddish, but a glossary would have been a good idea. Still, a haunting, powerful novel. less
