review 1: A romantic suspense novel I purchased for my Kindle because it was on sale and it featured Portland OR. I ended up liking it--probably 3.5 stars total for me. A serial killer tagged "John the Baptist" has been killing prostitutes in gory crucifixion scenes, staking their hands, stabbing them into rivers in Portland OR. Detective Luca gets called to a late night scene and finds the victim, Hero, is gravely injured but alive. Hero is very different from the other victims in that she isn't in the sex trade and that she survived. Luca gets assigned to protect her as her boyfriend to hopefully draw the killer out. I liked the Portland setting and scenes and the supporting characters, Hero has a large Irish-Russian family made up of ex-military, various forms of law enforcement ... moreand even a chef-famous MMA cage fighter--who are apparently going to be getting their own books and Luca has a fun and flirty partner. I liked that the romance was not the only focus and that the suspense kept me guessing. I'd try the next in the series.
review 2: A fantastic book from a new to me author and a series I will be reading!The heroine is the only survivor of a serial killer and the hero is the FBI agent in-charge of the case. I liked the heroine Hero, she was spunky, confident, an artist and I loved her family. The hero on the other hand was gruff and controlled and when he has to pretend to be her lover, the heroine does her level best to make it a reality. I loved the sexual tension in the book and despite a predictable plot-line the whodunnit was a surprise. less
