review 1: The Class Ceiling by Kerry Fisher wasn't exactly what I expected. It started with Maia's inheritance that actually didn't make the family better off financially but allowed her children to go to a private school and get a better education. Naturally, it caused lots of hidden financial strains for the family and personal issues such as how an uneducated working class mother (a cleaner) and a 'work shy' unemployed father would fit into the world of middle class parents. I was really interested to see how the author would solve all these problems and would have been happy to see a 'real solution' instead of turning the novel to a 'Cinderella story'.However, apart from the above point, the author has done an excellent job. The plot is entertaining, but thought provoking. The c... moreharacters are interesting and well developed and the social commentary is realistic but also satirical. I loved the twist at the end. Generally this is a story that is well worth reading, therefore I highly recommend it.
review 2: I don't normally read this type of book but really enjoyed this. Had me really feeling all the highs and lows with Maia. So true to life. Loved the fact that Zac was from Bolton (like me!!) Had me giggling in places and also almost crying (not to give it away but especially when Maia finds out about her Dad) The characters and the children were very realistically drawn and I never got bored with it. The only thing that bothered me a little bit was the assumption that the children would not have achieved the same at a non fee-paying school and the slight sadness I felt about there being so many people out there in similar situations that aren't so lucky. However, still a fantastic book and I will look out for the next one from this writer. less

Three and a half stars. It had some good twists, although a typical end.
