review 1: Book Review: Sweet MisfortuneKevin Alan Milne #review2014Original Language: EnglishPublisher: Center StreetCountry: USAPublication Date: June 10, 2010Page Count: 288My rating 3,5 stars BlurbSophie owns a chocolate shop where she sells Misfortune Cookies-dipped in bitter chocolate they contain messages she handwrites each day such as "Your car seems fine now, but just wait...it will eventually be a source of frustration and unexpected delay." What starts as a gimmick, turns into a surprise hit with customers. But when her ex-fiancée moves back to their small Washington town, he is surprised at how bitter and unhappy Sophie has become. He proposes a bet--she must place an ad in the paper that simply states "Wanted: Happiness." If at least 100 people respond, proving happine... moress isn't a myth, she agrees to a date with him. If not, he'll leave her alone forever. Sophie is convinced she'll win, but fate has other ideas when a reporter at the paper is intrigued by the ad as a story and posts it in newspapers across the country.ReviewThe story Twenty years ago, on her 9th birthday, Sohpia lost her parents & grandmother to a fatal car accident. A year ago her fiance Garrett Black walked away from their wedding without explanation.Sophia is now the owner of Choclat' de Soph, where she is famous for the "Misfortune Cookies" she makes...it is her 29th birthday and in walks Garrett asking for a date so that he might explain the circumstances of his "fleet". Sophia agrees on the condition that Garrett place an ad in the local paper: "WANTED HAPPINESS: Lasting happiness only. Nothing that fleets. Please send suggestions to...." and that she receives 100 responses of non-fleeting happiness, of which she will be the sole judge.CharactersSofie's snarkiness from the beginning had me thinking I wouldn't like her as a character, but she is given depth and growth throughout the book that I found myself seeing much of myself in herThe characterizations of Ellen and Evalynn are not as strong as Sophie's. Her foster mother and foster sister, respectively, are present in the story but at certain points serve a means to an end: getting Sophie and Garrett back together. The plot has many unexpected twists and turns between believable characters that you come to love. Each character adds to the story line! The story of Sophia and Garrett falling in love was very nice. This passage was the best in the book. This story shows how a persons understanding of an incident can be, if not exactly selfish, but skewed to the point that it can change ones life. This book proves that there are always three sides to every story -your side, how everyone else saw it and the truth. And this book prove that there are three truths. The perspective that is taken is what makes it different for each person. Each perspective tells a small part of the story, but put them together to get the whole. The dialogue was great, the characters real, but did think there were a few too many coincidences. This novel allowed me to have a lot of laughter, tears, curiosity, frustration and joy. The back story blends perfectly with the current, leaving you to wonder what is the true meaning of happiness. It's not the kind of book I usually read but it didn't take long to get sucked in and before I knew it I couldn't put it down. I loved this book. I loved the misfortunes at the beginning of the chapters. They were hilarious and made me laugh. Super cute and could make a great book club book. Sometines the most meaningful lessons can be learned with less and this somewhat simple tale delivers in a big way. This novel is Nicely written, not entirely predicable, and with good character development. I recommend it for enjoyable, light reading. Better than most romances!Quotes“"Have patience, rainy days will soon return"”Misfortune Cookie“"Something you lost will soon turn up, but some lost things are better unfound"”Misfortune Cookie“"You'll never really be happy. How sad"”Misfortune Cookie“"You will soon fall in love. Caution: when people fall, something usually breaks"”Misfortune Cookie“"Your doubts about the future are easily explained. You're paranoid"”Misfortune Cookie“"Compel yourself to something you wouldn't normally do, because what you normally do doesn't seem to be working"”Misfortune Cookie“"Some people are lucky in love. You aren't one of them"”Misfortune Cookie“"When you speak honestly and openly, people truly listen. They don't believe you, but at least you have their attention"”Misfortune CookieYour greatest success is your aptitude for failure.Compel yourself to do something you wouldn’t normally do, because what you normally do doesn’t seem to be working.
review 2: Sweet Misfortune by Kevin Alan Milne provides a fun and light read that keeps the reader hooked. I greatly enjoyed this book, so much so that I didn’t set it down until I finished. Kevin Alan Milne will prove to suspicious readers that men can write fun, sassy romances. While Sophie’s life overflows with heartbreak, the story never bogs down with sadness. On the contrary, it remains light and optimistic even though the main character is a “the-glass-is-half-empty” kind of girl. Following the main theme, each chapter opens with a fun misfortune that I often felt compelled to share with others.Sweet Misfortune frequently elicited laughter and now proudly perches on “My Favorites” list. I definitely will read this story again—very soon! I wish I could find more books that left me as happy as this one. If you like romances, you cannot miss this novel.Review copy provided by Center Street. less
