review 1: I must admit to being a huge fan of Kevin Hawkes, who often spotlights characters with unique perspectives on life, such as Remy in Hawkes' latest title Remy and Lulu. When the home of a portrait painter and Lulu, on the Rue de Rivloli in Paris is sold, the spotted dog, must roam the streets homeless. Wandering into the countryside she meets a portrait painter named Remy, sporting glasses with very thick frames. He kindly shares his cheese and a crust of hard bread and a bond of friendship between Remy and Lulu is formed. Together they look for customers for Remy to paint. Since he has poor vision, Remy "paints the essence of a person, not their likeness," and his paintings rarely sell. All at once that changes with a little help from Lulu. The lush colorful, soft, express... moreive paintings of Kevin Hawkes combined with the intricate detailed inset paintings by co-illustrator Hannah Harrison tell the secret of Remy's new found success. Hawkes' message of great work comes from a passionate heart, will not be missed by young listeners.
review 2: I love the lines "my eyesight is not good," Remy joked, "but my vision is clear!" Lulu noticed that a few people were willing to pay for "essence."This book is so unique by combining Hawkes art with the miniatiures by Hannah E. Harrison. What an example of "Why picture books are important". I can't imagine this as an e-book. Holding the book in my hands and being able to turn back and examine each page is a joy. less

Great read aloud for elementary. Super illustrations. Pair with "Officer Buckle and Gloria."
