review 1: Great collection of stories from the favorite director of my generation - from the ridiculous to the sublime and back again. Lots of insight and behind the scenes stories, if you are into that kind of thing. I just thought it was a fun read.My girlfriend listened to this in her truck, while I listened to it flying from Reno to Bismarck and back again. She had a few day head start, and finished a little before I did. It was funny to hear her tell me how much Kevin sounded like me, whether a turn of phrase or just general outlook, before she finished with it, she was calling him my brother from another mother. Before it was over, I had to agree, this guy would fit right in with me and the guys. Hard not to like a fella like that. PLUS a few of his stories, made me loo... morek down right civilized by comparison...
review 2: Before I get to the review, here's a little back-story: When my two brothers and I were kids we would go to my dad's house every other weekend, rent movies, and hang out. My brothers and I picked the same movie to rent every time - Kevin Smith's Mallrats. Thus began our family obsession with Kevin Smith. We have spent countless hours watching his movies and his Q&A dvds. I follow him on Twitter, I've caught a few podcasts, I've read his book... and yeah, you get the point. That said, I kinda knew I'd love this book before I even read/listened to it (I listened to the audio book, which he hilariously narrates). But, I wasn't expecting how much I would love this book.Kevin Smith is hilarious, vulgar, and raunchy as hell, while still being intelligent. He's an astounding balance of cringe-worthy dirtiness and articulate intelligence. Not a feat many people can pull off. I assumed this book would be like Kevin's Q&As in which he tells many of his highly amusing life stories, and it is, but it's much more. This book is full of wisdom on life, on dreaming, and accomplishing your goals. It's about friendship, family, and self awareness and acceptance. It's about loving yourself and loving life. It's also about tough life lessons (hence the "Tough Shit" title). While filled with countless quips about cum and masturbation, there are actually touching moments in this book that are so sweet and passionate that I choked up a little. What book can make you cringe one minute and then make you go "awwww" the next? Not many. It's Kevin Smith's superpower. The man is amazing with words, it's his natural gift. Even if you're a prude that can't handle a bit of penis talk, you can still relate to the wisdom and heart in this book. less

As a Kevin Smith fan, it would have had to have been something truly awful to get less than 5 stars. I expected a written/audio version of his Q&A shows, and for the most part it is that. Not a bad thing. Smith has a ridiculous quality for talking, spinning a tale that is funny, disgusting, and even occasionally touching. I'd heard plenty of these stories before, but they all still contained new info and new laughs. It will never stop saddening me to know how much of a tool Bruce Willis is.The opening is pretty inspiring infact. I guess we are all winners in a way. And as is said, if you want something, go and do what you can to get it.I think the audio book was a good choice, as I do think hearing the author of works read it themselves adds something, especially when they are so distinctive in their writing and especially their voice. But, in print or in voice, if you like his work, or just like crude humour and good stories then this is a good way to spend some time.
