review 1: This was by no means an easy read. Not only was the subject itself difficult, but the style of writing is extremely descriptive. It both repulsed and drew me in at the same time. I found myself unable to put it down, while at the same time being disgusted by what I was reading. It offered a unique view of the Civil War - points of view not often expressed, and for that reason made it unique and interesting. I would definitely recommend this book, but with a caution that it is very graphic.
review 2: I really enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. It was a Kindle deal, and worth the $1.99...Honestly though, it sheds a different perspective on the Civil War than we usually see. Typically, we think of it as North vs South and in some cases we've seen the f
... moreight from the side of the Black slaves, fighting for their freedom. But there were other minorities in the States at the time that we've forgotten about and it's interesting to see how they were involved in the war. Plus, to just see the hope that people clung to and also how their beliefs changed as the war progressed, was interesting to see and written in a realistic and believable manner. I really enjoyed this book. less
