review 1: The problem with a lot of Kim Dare's works is that I'll like the basic premise and then hate the execution. I like the idea of this story, and it was fine right up until magically, Leon is 100% on board with living a D/s lifestyle. He can't even call himself Rupert's boyfriend, it immediately jumps to "his submissive". The actual talking about the relationship seems fairly minimal, despite all the big drama about talking. Rupert ends up coming off as a bit of a creep ("I want to put you under my protection") and Leon is a tiny kitten attempting to roar.I will give this story one bit of credit: at least there were less epithets than usual for Kim Dare.
review 2: I thought the premise for this book was interesting--what do you do when you realize your lover is a
... moremuch sought after dom and you are inexperienced and straight vanilla? Lots of potential in this story. I was so glad to see a dom I could like. Rupert was extremely patient and sweet with Leon and he actually told Leon no when he suggested a whipping cause he realized pain did not turn Leon on. Things I was not so thrilled with--I think Leon may force himself to do things just because he thinks Rupert is missing them. I wasn't totally convinced that Leon truly believed Rupert when he said he loved him and would work within his comfort zone. I would have liked a little more history or interaction between Leon and his friends and family so I could see him outside of the Love at first site, first gay experience with Rupert thing. Leon was a fully functioning adult earning a master's degree yet in dialogue with Rupert he sometimes came off sounding like an idiot. Maybe it is just me but it seems submissives too often come off as stupid and childlike in their dialogue and it always leaves me with a bad feeling--I really don't enjoy that. I give this book 3 stars. Short but sweet. less
