review 1: I loved this book before I'd even read it, just because of how beautifully it extends the canon of the Holmes universe. However, while I really did enjoy reading it, it was almost as if I enjoyed reading simply because of the information I knew it would give me. There were times when I got lost in it, but it was a bit hard to get through, and it went a bit slow (probably due to its size, though; I have a hard time estimating correctly how long something will take to get through.) Sometimes I would find myself reading passages so riddled with allusions I had no idea what was going on, but the language and general beauty of the words fitting together was so seductive and convincing that I kept reading. Moran isn't a man I would want to bring home to my parents, but he's cert... moreainly a wonderful storyteller.
review 2: Definitely weird. Moriarty and Colonel Sebastian "Basher" Moran are described as the 'twisted evil twins' of Holmes and Watson. This is a book about their crime ring, complete with more references to books set in the C19th than I can even name, told in the format of Basher's memoirs, discovered in a bank vault when the bank manager is arrested in 2008 for being a crook, and calls in a historian from their cell to edit and publish the material under threat of pet-maiming. Honestly, there is no way I can even try to review the plot of this one! It was convoluted, crazy and very creative. I liked it, and would definitely recommend it if you're interested in strange books. less

Holmes and Watson for Bastards. Plus Kim Newman is fast becoming one of my favorite writers.

The sly jokes to readers are almost as much fun as the book itself.

Basher Moran as a dark mirror of Watson. ... whats not to like.

Terrific. My only regret is the ending; may I hope for more?
