review 1: I am so confused by the 4 & 5 star ratings that I'm starting to wonder what book all these other people read or if they just have incredibly low expectations. In bullet points because I hate typing on my iPad...Awful writingPoor flowSooooo cornyLines a normal man would never, ever say (EVER)No source of conflictWeak storylineI found this for free on amazon. You get what you pay for in this case.
review 2: The first thing that caught my attention about this book was the cute title--IT STARTED WITH A LIMA BEAN. But this light romance about a widower and his daughter's kindergarten teacher does not start with a Lima bean. It starts with a death scene. I kept reading but found it difficult to connect with author Kimi Flores' characters. I kept putting the book down
... more to do other things and caught myself wondering when the story would start moving. Abby teaches kindergarten. Her best friend Leah is a business owner. Yet they exist in a high school atmosphere complete with mean girls ("power moms")who seem to have no other purpose than to make outrageous plays for the quarterback (Caleb). There's also a tendency for the characters to think in the same voice they use to speak with small children. It's one thing for Abby to say to little Madison, "Your daddy is here." It's another for her to pass Caleb on the street and think--Oh, look, there's Madison's daddy. Once might be sweet, but Abby and some of the other female characters regularly lapse into kiddie-think. Finally, the romance never takes off for me. Abby isn't interesting enough for a guy like Caleb. She doesn't pull her weight in the story. Less central characters like Leah and Stefen have more charisma. In fact, they made the difference in my giving this book three stars rather than two. I see a lot of potential there, and I'm glad that they will be the stars of Flores' next book. less
