review 1: I honestly wanted to like this book soo bad!! The plot definately had a lot of potential, and the book started off interestingly enough, but nothing ever happened! I was waiting for something exciting or drastic to happen in this story, but nothing ever did. I found the main character Grace to be quite boring and too passive, just not interesting. The character of Mandarin seemed a bit more exicting, but at the same time predictable and frustrating. I must say I was hoping from a lot more from this book, and i totally disliked the ending and the general lackluster of the storyline. That being said this is not a horrible book, just quite boring.
review 2: So I'm kind of biased since I traveled with Kirsten in Honduras a few years ago. Yet her first book intrigue
... mored me enough to check it out. A tangible, simple storyline about a female high-school student yearning to be socially accepted (can't we all relate to this?) while at the same time struggling with boredom in small-town Wyoming, drives the book in such a way that you really do care what happens to each character (yes, even the nine-year-old pageant princess). The backdrop of Wyoming is exotic to me, and probably most Americans, and Kirsten lures you in with the dust, ranches, barns and other relics. But even more exotic is the character of Mandarin, who the main character becomes entangled with in a friendship that tests both of their limits in terms of how far they will go to escape Washokey, Wyoming. A very character-driven novel, it leaves a lasting impression yet moves very quickly thanks to Kirsten's confident prose. less

I didn't finish. I think I got 2 and half chapters in. I just couldn't enjoy the main character.

This book was just ok. I bit heavy on the description side and no real romance. :(
