review 1: On the one hand, I really enjoyed reading this book. On the other hand, it left a lot to be desired--surprisingly, there it didn't seem to be as much about Joe DiMaggio as about all of the other people that were involved with him during his streak. The other thing that bothered me some is the level of fictionalization that Kennedy seemed to include. As an example, there is quite a bit of internal monologue at various points in the book. While that kind of thing may make a book more readable, it simultaneously introduces a kind of skepticism about the accuracy of the details.

Baseball games were interrupted or delayed so FDR’s talks could be broadcasted over the public address systems. And more than politics as the book ends with a discussion of probability theory and statistical analysis of hitting in 56 consecutive games. less
