review 1: Margaret McManus is 24 years old and she is a widow. Her husband died tragically in an accident while he was in the military. Mags is left as a shell of the person she used to be and is no longer has the fun loving spirit she did before. Margaret has a hard time trying to find normal and a way to keep living. She tries many times to get rid of her feelings of grief and move on and she is potentially able to with her husbands best friend, Walker. Kristen did a phenomenal job writing these characters and this plot line. I felt Mag's emotions and all the pain and heartbreak that she went through. Many moments absolutely killed me and had me crying due to the emotion."But, Mags…" his eyes were pleading as he pulled away just enough so I could look at him, still scathing mad.... more"You're my true north. No compass would point me in any other direction but to you."There is a surprising twist towards the end that I did not see coming. This is the part where I really lost it. I was balling my eyes out feeling the hurt that all the characters were going through.I absolutely loved this book and look forward to the sequel. I simply cannot believe that this is Kristen's debut novel, since it is so beautifully written.
review 2: Being a widow at any age must be a difficult thing. But becoming a widow at 24 is extremely devastating. This is exactly what happens to our MC Mags. She married her college sweetheart and their life was perfect, a new house, a new car. She had everything she wanted. But tragedy strikes as her husband Randy is killed in military accident. Finding it difficult to move on, she finds comfort in her 3 best friends. One of them which who happens to also be her deceased husbands best friend, who is also struggling with the grief of losing his best friend. What initially starts off a platonic friendship starts to develop into sparks, but with either of them be able to move on from losing Randy to find comfort and love with one another? Will Mags every learn the big secret that Walker keeps? There were many enjoyable aspects about this book. First off I am always a big sucker for any stories that have to do with service men and women. I was instantly drawn into the heart break that Mags was experiencing after losing her husband. I also really enjoyed all the different friendship in this book. Whether it was with Mags, Calie, Mitch and Walker or the loving relationship that Mags still has with her ex-husbands parents. These relationships were real and you could feel the love flowing from the pages. I enjoyed the story and there were a lot of twists and turns that come up that made it interested. I would have liked to seen a little more character development, especially with the relationship between Mags and her mother and personally there was just a little too much drinking going on for my taste. But overall I did enjoy this book and enough so that I immediately picked up book 2. less
