... Little Pig!
review 1: You might think that figure skating would be, along with ballet and gymnastics, a perfect subject for picture books for little girls. Sadly, the ballet monster consumes all, leaving just a smattering of other popular girlie sports picture books (don't get me started on the lack of roller skating!). Of the pittance of figure skating picture books, this is the best of the lot. Yamaguchi gets the heart of the story right, and the illustrations are cute and clear, but the writing itself lacks the lyrical poetry to make this a good read aloud. Such a shame!
review 2: This is a charming children's book about following your dreams, being persistent and working hard for something you dream of. Poppy Pig has a lovely supportive family who encourage her to follow her
... more dreams no matter how big they are. Poppy gets knocked back for not having any natural talent in the areas she dreams of, but by the end, she finds something that she works at and improves at as well as enjoys. It is a lovely moral for kids, and is refreshing as Poppy must work for her success, and isn't just given a happy ending. The prose is delightful with rhyme and repetition frequenting the paragraphs, character development in such a short story is well done, as we feel for Poppy and see how she copes with her setbacks. The illustrations are cute, clear and bring the story to life. Overall, I liked reading this book, would read it to my own children, and recommend it as a story to offer encouragement to children. less
