review 1: Kristin Kimball left a lucrative job in NYC as a journalist after interviewing, falling in love, and eventually marrying Mark. Together they "built" Essex Farm. Toil, sweat, and love of the earth and what it could provide, she realized was far more rewarding, and what she wanted from life. With over one hundred CSA members, the farm is still providing. The descriptions of seasons, and what each brought was fascinating. I could feel the long days, and hard work, understand her love of the animals, and enjoy the true friendships and acceptance that are a part of the farming life. From dream to reality, the story of Kristin's transformational thinking and lifestyle was engaging. Her easy style made for a quick, enjoyable read.

... moreook made me want to throw off the shackles of a five day work week for the (not so) simple life of working on a farm. This book was so honest it hurt. I was/am one of the yuppies in her book, lover of my backyard chickens, buyer of grass-fed beef and fresh veggies at the farmer's market, but Kimball doesn't sugar coat everything like so many 'buy-locals' do. She admits her beef is tough, that her milk might taste like onions (or lobster? ew!) and this honesty is what made me love this book so much. She's not trying to convince anyone to pick up a hoe, but when she describes how tired she is, and how afraid of the weeds going to seed she is, I can't help but wanting to join her in the fields. At least when I read Farm City, my wife and I were able to buy chickens, but now I'm stuck in Japan for a year, with no hope of starting a farm. Curse you Kimball, for making me homesick way too soon! less
