Author Robert Ellis has written seven best-selling crime novels – including City of Fire, The Lost Witness, and Murder Season – featuring Lena Gamble, a tough Los Angeles detective. Robert Ellis studied film and philosophy at Ohio University, where he was one of the first students to graduate with a BFA with a concentration in film.

The school’s BFA program in film is administered through the Athens, Ohio Honors Tutorial College. The four-year program involves numerous tutorials focusing on film such as film theory, history of film, screenwriting, directing, and producing. Students also engage in hands-on practical courses working with other students to help them learn about the collaborative work of video production. Prospective graduates must also broaden their base of knowledge through liberal arts classes in areas like English and history.

At the end of their program, students complete a thesis project, which can take the form of a full-length film or screenplay. Graduates are prepared for a career in film or television, and can also continue on to pursue graduate studies. Fellow students from Ohio University include Maya Lin, who designed the Vietnam Memorial, Ed Lackman, the Academy Award nominated cinematographer, and Joe Eszterhas, the award-winning screenwriter who wrote Jagged Edge and Basic Instinct, among others.
