review 1: Divine, L. Drama High: So, So Hood. New York: Kensington Publishing Corp, 2011.Characters: Jayd Jackson, 17 year old high school senior; Mama/Lynn Mae, Jayd’s grandmother; Netta, Mama’s hair salon co-owner; Jeremy, Jayd’s boyfriend; Rah, Nigel, Mickey, and Nellie, Jayd’s crew; Misty, Jayd’s “frenemy”; Esmeralda, Mama’s evil neighborSetting: Compton, CaliforniaTheme: teenage drama, African-American, friendships, dating relationshipsGenre: Hi-low, YA, multicultural Summary: As Jayd gets ready for her senior year at South Bay High, another chapter in her life opens up to the usual drama between her friends, frenemies, mean teachers, and evil neighbors. New developments involving her growing powers as a newly initiated voodoo priestess make juggling a boyfriend... more, making money, and keeping up with schoolwork almost unbearable. Her only option to get ready and face her troubles, following her ancestors’ motto to never back out from a fight. Target Audience: teenage females, Ages 14-18Critical Response: Intended for the Hi-low reader, this new novel in the series, “Drama High”, involves all the typical high school drama that girls experience and includes an interesting mix of other social problems involving drugs, teen pregnancy, rivalries, and cultural heritage. The reading level is noticeably easy and the author uses a large amount of slang dialogue. The inclusion of a reading group guide with discussion questions and a “Start your own book club” guide complete with resources make this book and the series a great opportunity for reluctant readers to group together and get interested in continuous reading.
review 2: I love this series because I enjoyed reading this book. This author did a really good and excellent job to put out this book because it's always on point and it's funny series. In the beginning of this book, it was slow and steady at the same time but I like it. I do not believe in voodoo priestess or vampire but if I have a supernatural power then I would help people with their issues and my issue. Mickey should tell the truth to Nigel about the letter and her ex-man but she didn't. I think that Jayd should give Jeremy another chances because he was wrong for allows Cameron kisses him on their lip. He should tell Cameron that he has a girlfriend and he doesn't want to lose Jayd because he loves her but he didn't. I don't like Misty, Nigel's mom, Misty's godmother, and Cameron at all. I felt bad what's happen to Pam because she doesn't deserve to die. So far, I enjoyed reading this book because it's well written and well characters. This book and this author deserved five stars. I'm looking forward to read Street Soldiers vol 15 later on today. less
