review 1: Text-to-self: Throughout middle and high school, pottery was always my favorite part of art. There is something about molding and manipulating clay that make pottery very different from other art forms. Looking at the picture brings back wonderful memories of squishy cold clay between my fingers, the smooth wet clay on the wheel ready to be spun, and gooey dirty hands. While my feelings for pottery are not the same as Dave's, there is an understanding of appreciation as more the just dirt. Text-to-world: I think there are many things in peoples lives that hold importance to that individual. Their is some work that individuals put their heart, soul, and life into. While these circumstances are much different than Dave’s, having part of an individual shown through the work... more that they do is seen in both. Text-to-text: This book reminds me a little of The Poet Slave of Cuba: A Biography of Juan Francisco Manzano by Margarita Engle. These books both share expression and slaves' stories though creative and poetic means.
review 2: This would be a great book to read at a time in class when we are talking about slavery. This gives us a look at the live of a slave. I could compare this to students by showing them that even though Dave was a slave he could still read and write and was a great artist. This would help students see that he was just like them. I would relate this to the world by talking more about slavery and some of the different experiences that slaves had. Lastly I would compare this to another book by talking about Harriet Tubman. I could also ask the students if they know of any books or movies about slavery. less
