review 1: I read the translation of this story in English by Vasanthi Sanakaranarayanan. Sharing some lines here which I felt still holds some relevance- Spoken by Devaki Manampalli, an "antharjanam" who fled from her husband's home unable to tolerate the suffocating atmosphere of the "illam" and the ways of its inhabitants steeped in ancient traditional rules of conduct and lifestyle- "I do not represent any particular community, religion or society. I am the representative of the womenfolk who have been subjected to suffering for centuries. Looking at this truth which stands before you, the veil discarded, you may curse or bless. But this load of sorrow which is our very own was your creation.....Remember that.". "Our own personal load of sorrow".... "the curse common to Thankam, ... moreher sister-in law, their mother, grandmothers.....their loads of sorrow. Could they relieve it from the heads of the next generation?"
review 2: അഗ്നിശാക്ഷിയിലേതുപോലെ ശപിക്കപെട്ട സ്ത്രീ ജീവിതങ്ങള്‍ ഇന്നത്തെ മലയാളീ സമൂഹത്തില്‍ പൊതുവേ ഇല്ല എന്നോര്‍ത്ത് സന്തോഷിക്കാം. അതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ എഴുത്തുകാരി അവകാശപെടുന്നപോലെ - 'കഴിഞ്ഞു പോയ കാലത്തിന്റെ കണ്ണീരും കിനാവുകളും പേര്‍ത്തെടുത്ത് പരിശോധിക്കാന്‍' അഗ്നിസക്ഷിയിലൂടെ കഴിയുന്നു.ഇന്ന്, സ്നേഹമാണ് 'അഗ്നിസാക്ഷി'. ഒന്നുകൂടെ ഊന്നി പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ അതിനുവേണ്ടിയുള്ള ദാഹം. അച്ഛന്റെ സ്നേഹത്തിനു വേണ്ടി വെമ്പല്‍ കൊള്ളുന്ന തങ്കം, ഭര്‍ത്താവിന്റെ സ്നേഹം കിട്ടാതെ ബ്രാന്ധു പിടിച്ച ജലപിശാച്ചു മുത്തശ്ശി, ആചാരങ്ങല്ലോടുള്ള addiction കാരണം സ്വന്തം ഭാര്യയെ സ്നേഹിക്കാന്‍ കഴിയാതെ പോയ ഉണ്ണിയേട്ടന്‍, വിരിയാതെ പോയ PKP-തങ്കം പ്രണയം, അങ്ങനെ ഒരുപിടി സ്നേഹങ്ങള്‍...പ്രേമം - ചപലവികാരം - നിര്‍ദോഷമായ ഒരു കൌതുകം... less
