review 1: As an avid reader of all things Beatles, it's rare for me to come across new or fresh info. This book accomplishes just that for me. Taking an entirely different perspective than other books on one of my favorite topics, the book traces the fellas from the very earliest starts up to the breakthrough year of 1963. What's even more unique is the book examines not just the genesis of the group and how they found success, but also takes great lengths to dissect all those that played such pivotal roles in that same success. Whether it be writers, crew, admirers, former members, family, crew...whatever. The story of The Beatles truly is a once in a million years phenomenon of four of the most gifted souls ever teaming up to be the most successful musical group of all time. ... moreBut lightning was also caught in a bottle with those that surrounded them along with an incredible amount of fortune, luck, and folks just being in the right place at the right time. Highly recommended for The Beatles fanatic, however, not suggested as a first book on the beginner Beatles historian. Dig it.
review 2: This book is 5 stars if you love ' The Beatles ' but only 3 stars if you just tolerate them. This book is way different than Larry Kane's initial book written in 2003 .. " Ticket To Ride ". In that book he told the story of their unreal tour of the United States , as they went from city to city and established their reputation. It was a fun and exhilarating adventure. This book starts their story from when they were just kids in Liverpool. You will learn about ' the Lads ' as they grew up in Liverpool, dreaming but not expecting the fame that would ensue. The Liverpool of their youth was a very bombed out city as a result of the German Luftwaffe's constant bombing during the early part of WWII. But the city survived and became robust again. The book also will try to correct some myths about ' the boys ' too. Only Ringo truly came from a poor, lower class family and he did have some dangerous health problems when he was young. But Paul and John and George all came from solid middle class families.....families that encouraged their talents. Kane follows each of them as they grew together to form what many people feel was the greatest band to conquer this planet. Kane will destroy some myths and establish the true path they took. He interviews so many of the people that helped or hindered their ascent. But one of things that I liked best was that he allowed these people to speak to you in their own words. Many chapters contain the actual words that these people used to tell the story.....it wasn't Kane's interpretation of these events. If you love ' The Beatles ' you may even love them even more after reading Larry Kane's ' When They Were Boys ' less
