review 1: GRAPHIC NOVEL CATEGORYI really enjoyed the creative representation of an introvert's mind and her journey inside herself and exploring herself in order to come to peace with who she was. I personally related to the insecurities Paige had and I'm sure many young adult readers would as well. Even little things that she said in passing, such as how she felt nervous about using a new notebook because she couldn't tear out the pages if she messed up, resonated with me because I remember that exact same feeling when I took art classes in high school. The graphic novel format offers a lot more, I think, to the interpretation of the text. I was able to see minute details drawn into the story that if it were in a novel format would probably take paragraphs of unnecessary detail in ... moreorder to convey the same idea.
review 2: Ignore the previous title. Ignore the plot, if which there isn't much anyway, but what exists is completely irrelevant. What is important about this utterly charming graphic novel is the excellent portrayal of the inner life of a shy, introspective introvert. If you've ever been the person who hid in the corner of a party on your cell phone to avoid taking to people, or had someone walk away from you giving you a weird look after you told a rambling story, and fallen into puts of despair doubting your skills, talents, or general worthiness of taking up space, this book will speak to you. But even more than the portrayal of inner life, the importance of this book is the art. It is complex and nuanced, Escher-esque in the way many of the pieces incorporate multiple elements. The art is so expressive, it could almost tell the story without words. less
