review 1: I want to call this a beach read because it takes place in a small Florida town not to far outside St. Augustine because it's not to heavy of a ready but light and pithy. But I feel that it is above that sand encrusted paperback we usually shove in our beach bag. Heart of Palm embraces the true dilemma all Floridians face the real Florida vs. the sprawl of modernization. The book wraps that plight up and entwines it with the life of the Bravos from Utina, why in some ways may seem cliche Florida cracker trash in other ways they exemplify the small town family struggle that many Floridians pioneered on their own. The book was an enjoyable read to say the least and makes me think twice when I pass that old Victorian next to Publix.
review 2: Heart of Palm by
... moreLaura Lee Smith was a thoroughly enjoyable read. I first thought it would be another predictable sappy beach read because of the title and the cover. But it was so much more than it seemed. It's a story of a family in an area of Florida where there hasn't been much development throughout their lifetime. But, of course, all good things must come to an end (especially when the greedy developers discover it) and suddenly, this family is sitting on a gold mine. The story involves the tough decisions that must be made and the impact the decision has on each family member. All in all a very satisfying read that kept my attention. Highly recommend. less
