review 1: I enjoyed reading this book but I did feel a little bit angry about it. Basically it showed us that once you have connections in the world you can get anything you want. It just makes me sad for the "normal" people that get stuck in these situations but don't have the backing of presidents and numerous other politicians. Having said that, it was an interesting read, I'm glad that she made it out okay and I enjoyed getting a bit of a closer look in to North Korea.
review 2: Both sisters are journalists, and either despite it or because of it, this story comes across cold and detached. The audiobook is narrated by both sisters as well, which provides an interesting perspective - in and outside the situation - and I just couldn't connect with them. I'm sure it was
... more terribly scary for Laura Ling to be trapped in North Korea, but the truth is her whole ordeal is rather tame. She was fed well, kept in touch with her family, and eventually rescued by President Clinton. There is very little information about North Korea or its people, primarily just insight into what Laura is feeling/wearing/doing/eating any given time. If you're looking for a nail-biting adventure memoir, this isn't it. less
