review 1: Laura McNeal describes the life of Pearls life with great details. Pearl and her mother are tight on money, they are trying to get by day to day. She lives in a house thats on her Uncles property, thats also being fully paid by him. Her Uncles workers are mostly all immigrate, some legal, Some not. It shows how Pearl meets a man named Amiel, and the relations between them that starts to grow, they wouldn’t have had this if her uncle hadn’t hired him.Pearl tries to figure it out, communicate with him, but finds out for some reason he is mute. She starts to learn more about him, there is a connection that she can’t figure out. She is determined to speak to him in anyway she can. She tries to speak Spanish, writing things down and sometimes she can’t get an answer, bu... moret when she does it’s always surprising. Amiel tells her there was an accident. Pearl and her friend Robby find what they think is a homeless persons house/set up in the woods. When Pearl is exploring she finds a box and opens it up, and to her surprise its the same note card Amiel presented to her uncle when he was hiring him for the job. Everyday she learns more and more about him. Befriending him they get closer and closer. He starts to leave her presents like flowers, and shells. One day while she was with him something unexpected happened, not realizing she was actually falling for him but realizing it as soon as he kissed her. As they days went by she was spending more and more time with him.A forest fire started to spread, at first they were safe but she went to her best friends house and found they were being evacuated. She was supposed to be leaving with her friend but wandered off to the woods in search of Amiel to warn him. She found him and tried to explain, he refused to leave. Thinking that he would be sent back to Mexico, she kept trying to explain that he’d be fine. Later she learn her Uncle found out that she had not gone with the friends family and set out to find her. He looked and looked and as the fire spread more and more he tried to outrun it but was killed in the fire. After the fire was gone there was a funeral for him, Pearl felt as if it was all her fault. She told herself if she hadn’t been out in the woods, he wouldn’t have gone after her and been killed.I think the point of this book was to show how two people who are so different, could grow to learn about each other through the things they did in everyday life, having feelings for someone despite what others say, and to learn to love not based on where you come from, what you look like, or what you did in the past but what and who you are to and with that person.
review 2: This book started out as promising. A girl with different colored eyes meets this poor Mexican worker boy and falls in love with him. Classic forbidden romance. I must admit although this plot line has been done to death, I was eager to see where this was going to go. So, this girl falls in love with the homeless worker boy blah blah blah dealing with her own issues about her parents blah blah blah. And then there's this huge wildfire. Sounds exciting right? WRONG. Of course the stupid heroine (if she can even be called that) goes off trying to save her lover from the fires, with absolutely no regard for anyone else BUT HERSELF. Then she finds worker boy and instead of running for their lives they decide to jump in the lake, river, whatever and get frisky. WTF? Meanwhile her uncle gets himself KILLED trying to look for her and it is one hundred per cent her fault. But no, it doesn't end there. You would think after sacrificing her uncles life for the guy, he would have the decency to stay with her. But what does she get? A stupid note that basically says "I'm going back to Mexico. Remember me." Seriously. That's it. That's all she gets. But THEN instead of getting a clue, she wastes the rest of her life looking for this guy, totally clueless. Pathetic. Pathetic pathetic pathetic. Seriously. WTF? less
