review 1: Since I always wondered what being on a reality show like Survivor would be like, I eagerly picked up this boo. The author has presented a very good but tasteful rendition of what such an experience would be like. Robin Bicker is on a reality show and, with the rest of the cast, is whisked off to the Philippines to survive for the duration to win the million dollar prize. However, Robin is a victim of the ruthlessness and deceit of her fellow cast members, in particular Grant, who uses her to get closer to the prize. A year later, as the show is about to air, Robin is chosen for jury duty, and tries desperately to keep her participation in the reality show hidden from the jury and others, while enduring stinging twitter comments about the reality show and her public shame... more. This author definitely has intertwined the reality of a reality show with the modern judicial system. Her characterization of the other contestants in the reality show as well as of the public and her family is very realistic. I thoroughly enjoyed her depiction of just how a reality show really is, not at all like what we view on TV. As the plot progresses, Robin grows in maturity and self-esteem, which puts a positive spin on these events and life. Now that I have read the story, I am not sure whether being on a reality show is worth it, but it satisfied a lot of my questions. As for being a juror, I guess I will just have to accept that I may be one someday. I received this from Library Thing to read and review.
review 2: When I heard this book wasn't about Lucy and Monty, I wasn't sure if I would enjoy it as much as theirs. I didn't hesitate to buy it, though, as I am a big fan of writing by this author. Well, I enjoyed this book just as much as the others, if not more. The idea behind the book was completely fascinating to me and the characters were written with great depth and insight. I find it difficult to articulate why this author's books work so well for me, but I'll try. The writing is smooth, the dialogue sounds real, the characters have dimension and make choices (good and bad) that mesh with the people they are, and the plots are engrossing. Also, I have many "yeah, that is so true" moments when I read Ms Osterkamp's books - her writing is very thoughtful. As a bonus, we did get a little bit of Lucy, Monty and Jack in this book and, I have to say, I think Jack's book would make riveting reading. less
